Modern systems are increasingly composed of sensors and resource-constrained devices, are non-deterministic and build on ML and AI models, have no fixed topologies and boundaries, and integrate many technologies such as cloud, edge, IoT, 5G, and SDN. The complexity of these systems is introducing many challenges, ranging from security and privacy protection, to data management and data analysis. The role of Big Data and Data science is crucial to the success of these complex systems, in terms of system management, performance, and quality.
The workshop aims to provide the ground for researchers in the fields of big data and data science, as well as researchers in related fields (e.g., security and privacy, HPC, Cloud), to discuss about the future of big data and data science. First, the workshop will focus on discussing requirements and challenges introduced by the complexity of modern distributed systems that integrate heterogeneous technologies (e.g., Cloud, Edge, 5G, IoT), on one side, and a multitude of devices from minuscule sensors to powerful devices, on the other side. Second, the workshop will focus on how current techniques should be adapted and modified to keep the pace of modern distributed systems. The never-ending dilemma between privacy and accuracy will be discussed. Finally, the workshop will focus on industrial scenarios, where big data and data science techniques are at the basis of smart and high-performance systems in a variety of domains.
The overall goal of the workshop is to gather the big data and data science community in Italy and abroad to the aim of shaping the future of big data and data science in Italy, addressing the challenges introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic, on one side, and the Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR), on the other side.

WORKSHOP FORMAT
The proposed workshop is a full-day workshop that is run under the aegis of the CINI Italian National Lab on Big Data (https://www.consorzio-cini.it/index.php/en/labbigdata-home). It will be composed of one keynote speech, one panel and two presentation sessions. The main goal of the workshop is to discuss the future of big data and data science with reference at their key role in relevant domains such as cybersecurity and high performance computing.
PRESENTATION PROPOSALS
Proposals for presentations should be sent to nicola.bena@unimi.it using subject “[BDDS2022] Submission”. Proposals should include a one-page description of the subject matter and the name and address (including e-mail address) of the presenters. Proposals will be evaluated and selected on the basis of their quality, originality, relevance, and timeliness. The outcome of the workshop will be evaluated for a possible publication in an edited book.
